The three things that stop people at the door

The walk from the car to the door

You watched the videos and checked the schedule more than once. The hard part is the walk from your parking spot to the front door, because you have no idea what happens on the other side of it. So we wrote it down, step by step, below.

“I'll get in shape first”

You told yourself you would start once you dropped 30 pounds. That plan has a way of lasting years. Jiu jitsu is how you get in shape. Start now, sit out a round when you need to, and begin with two classes a week.

Too old, or I'll get hurt

You are 38, or 46, or 52, and your knees have a history. You are training to control a round. You tap early and the round stops. Rolling comes gradually and only when you say you are ready. Two of the coaches here are black belts, and people who have trained that long know how to go light with a beginner.

Your first class, step by step

The hard part is the first ten minutes: where to park, who to talk to, what to wear, and whether a stranger is waiting to roll with you. This is what happens, step by step.

  1. Before you come

Fill in the form. We call or text you to confirm a class time and tell you which class to join. Adult jiu jitsu classes run at noon and 6 PM Monday to Thursday, open mat Friday at noon and 6 PM, and No-Gi Saturday at 11 AM.

  2. Getting there

9745 Independence Ave, Chatsworth. On-site parking. Get there a few minutes early, walk in, and say you are here for your free class. We know you are coming.

  3. What to wear

A T-shirt and shorts or leggings. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday classes are No-Gi, so that is all you need. Monday and Wednesday are Gi classes. Ask about a gi when we confirm your class.

  4. On the mat

Every class is 60 minutes and every adult class is all levels. You train with the regular group, beginners and experienced students together. Rolling is introduced gradually and you are never forced before you are ready. Most people find they enjoy it much sooner than expected. When you tap, the round stops, so you decide when each round ends.

  5. Minute 60

You leave with the schedule and the prices: $100, $149 or $179 a month. No hard sell, no pressure.

Your first class is free. No commitment.

What the hour gives you

Get in shape without a treadmill

BJJ will get you in shape. Sixty minutes of moving another adult around a mat is the workout, and there is nothing to count. Start at the weight you are.

Handle yourself on the ground

BJJ was designed so a smaller, weaker person can control, and submit, a larger opponent on the ground. Jiu jitsu has no punches or kicks. You learn to escape, hold position and finish, and you practice it on a partner who is trying to stop you.

Leave calmer than you walked in

For sixty minutes your phone is in your bag and your whole attention is on the person in front of you. It is hard to think about work while someone is trying to pass your guard. You leave tired and quieter in the head.

It fits a workday

Gi: Monday and Wednesday, 12 PM and 6 PM. No-Gi: Tuesday and Thursday, 12 PM and 6 PM, and Saturday 11 AM. Open mat: Friday 12 PM and 6 PM. Every class is 60 minutes, so noon fits a lunch break and 6 PM fits the drive home. A class you can get to is a class you keep going to, and the progress shows. Belt promotions create visible milestones. You always know where you stand and what you're working toward.

Questions people ask before they come in

Maybe, and it does not change your hour. Every adult class is all levels: beginners and people who have trained for years take the same class, in the same room. The hour itself is in the walkthrough above. Rolling comes gradually and only when you say you are ready. Classes run at noon and 6 PM Monday to Thursday, open mat Friday, Saturday at 11 AM. Every class is 60 minutes.

No. BJJ will get you in shape. Show up ready to work and the fitness will come naturally. Everyone starts lost. That's normal and part of the process. If you need to sit a round out, sit it out. Start with two classes a week and build from there.

No. The noon and 6 PM classes fit a job and kids. You are not training to fight in the UFC. You are training to move better at 45 than you did at 44. Professor Jaime Mendez was a consensus All-American safety at Kansas State in 1993 and signed with the Philadelphia Eagles. He started jiu jitsu in 2011, after football, and his black belt came in 2018. Tap early, rest when you need to, and tell the coach about old injuries before class.

It is a contact sport, so nobody can promise zero injuries. Two rules work in your favor: jiu jitsu has no strikes, and the round stops the moment you tap. Rolling is introduced gradually and you are never forced before you are ready. Two of the coaches here are black belts, Professor Jaime Mendez and Coach Jon Bond. A black belt knows how to go light with a beginner. If a partner is too rough, tell the coach.

$100 a month for one day a week, $149 for two days, $179 unlimited. Gi and No-Gi are both included in all memberships. Your first class is free. No commitment.

Day one: a T-shirt and shorts or leggings. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday are No-Gi, so athletic clothes are all you need. Monday and Wednesday are Gi classes. Ask about a gi when we confirm your class. Gi BJJ uses a kimono uniform, with collar, sleeve, and lapel grips forming the basis of the game. No-Gi removes the uniform and shifts to clinch work, underhooks, and body control, closer to wrestling. Both are included in all memberships and complement each other well. Wash your gear after every class.

The coaches have names, ranks and photos on this page. The class photos on this page are real classes at 9745 Independence Ave. Rated 5.0 on Google (101 reviews) as of September 2026, and you can read every one of them. If a partner is too rough, tell the coach. Or come and see for yourself. The first class is free.
