What Exactly is Hapkido?
If you have been following martial arts or doing some research on them, you’ve probably come across styles like Taekwondo, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, and Karate. But one martial art you may not be too familiar with is Hapkido. Hapkido is a traditional Korean martial art that focuses and emphasizes self defense, joint locks, throws/takedowns, kicks, and strikes. It is considered one of the most well rounded martial arts available today. Some even describe it as the “Swiss Army Knife” of martial arts. At Renzo Gracie Evolution in Chatsworth, we offer Hapkido classes for kids, teens, and adults. We believe this gives our students students the tools to defend themselves, improve their fitness, and grow both mentally and physically.
The Philosophy of Hapkido
The word Hapkido consists three parts:
Hap (í•©) = Coordinated, joining, harmony
Ki (기) = Energy or inner power
Do (도) = Way, path, or art
Elements of Hapkido
1. Self-Defense Focus
Hapkido is widely recognized as a practical self defense. Students learn many of the following skills and more:
Joint locks and pressure points
Escapes from grabs, pins and holds
Takedowns and throws
Striking with hands, elbows, knees, and legs/feet
2. Dynamic and Circular Motion
Instead of meeting force with force, Hapkido uses circular, using movement to redirect energy. This principle allows a smaller person to overcome a larger attacker using leverage and technique.
3. Kicks and Strikes
Hapkido is famous for its dynamic kicking techniques, including spinning kicks and low-line self-defense kicks. Combined with strikes, it’s highly effective both in stand-up combat and defensive situations.
4. Weapons Training (Advanced Levels)
Bo staff, canes, kali sticks and knives are some of the tools utilized, giving students a broader understanding of martial combat and discipline.
